A Year in Review: A Letter from Our CEO and President

12/20/2018

2018 was a historic year in many ways. For MassMutual Greater Philadelphia, we had an unprecedented year of growth. We realigned our internal infrastructure and significantly expanded our geographic footprint. For the Greater Philadelphia Region, we celebrated our first ever Super Bowl victory! I had the opportunity to witness, in person, the Eagles winning the Super Bowl and words cannot describe the many emotions that washed over me that night. The energy has been electric, the stories have made us laugh and cry and the memories made will last a lifetime. There are many lessons we can take from the Eagle’s 2017 season and this underdog team that reminds me of our own team. Coach Pederson reminded us that “an individual can make a difference, but a team makes a miracle.” I am proud to say that together our team creates miracles every day for our clients and community.

This year has been another fantastic year of growth for our firm! Launching a new office in Princeton, New Jersey has long been an integral part of our strategic plan and has given us the opportunity to serve more of our neighbors, friends, families and business owners. The rebranding of our New Castle, Delaware office has amplified our messaging and resources, allowing us to meet the increasing demand for personalized financial service in the region. Our biggest transaction of the year was the acquisition of our Lehigh Valley office. With the addition of 50 advisors, along with their experienced and talented leadership team and staff, we are poised to make an even bigger impact on the communities we serve. Now, with a team of 45 specialists and staff, 175 advisors and over 20 locations, we have well positioned us to be one of the largest insurance and wealth management firms in the region.

Despite being a 132-year old firm, at MassMutual Greater Philadelphia we think like a startup company. This year was all about positioning the firm for the future. We felt it was an ideal time for us to revisit our guiding principles to better align with who we are today, spending a great deal of time dialing into our mission and reshaping our vision. Our vision is to be the most trusted and respected insurance and wealth management firm for our clients, partners, associates and communities. Our mission is to create extraordinary opportunities so that dreams become reality. To better execute these principles, we reorganized our leadership infrastructure so that we can empower our associates to take on leadership roles. Identifying, empowering and developing the next generation of leadership is essential for our growth and these changes will provide the platform for our leaders and firm to flourish.

Why is that important to our advisors and our clients? With this growth, we are composed to provide more resources to help our advisors build their practices and better serve the community. Whether it is through marketing, technology, training or the ease of doing business, we’re hyper focused on creating value and implementing strategies that position our advisors to better help their clients.

Our clients take pride in working with a firm that has been around since 1886, a firm that has stood the test of time through market corrections, world and economic crises, the Great Depression, the Great Recession and more. And through it all, we’ve been a steady force in their lives. With our expanded geographical footprint, technological capabilities and commitment to financial education, our clients get the absolute best experience available when working with MassMutual Greater Philadelphia advisors.

The world recently came together to honor the 41st President of the United States, George H. Bush. I found myself drawn to his life story. In these stories I found lessons in leadership, humility, dignity, priorities, family, and faith. It was a great reminder of what matters most – particularly at this time of year – at the end of the day, the things that will matter the most are the times that we spend with the people we love and cherish, not how many new clients we acquired or how many deals we closed.

In his inaugural address, Bush said, “We cannot hope to only leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account. We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent. A citizen who leaves his home, his neighborhood, and town better than he found it. What do we want the men and women who work with us to say when we are no longer there? That we were more driven to succeed than anyone around us, or that we stopped to ask if a sick child had gotten better, and stayed a moment there to trade a word of friendship?”

As I reflect on 2018, with all these incredible accomplishments and impactful events, I am reminded of our mission – To create extraordinary opportunities so that dreams can become reality. Whatever your dream may be, our commitment is to be by your side helping you to protect your family and support our community. When we rely on each other, find strength in each other, and ultimately, build a better future together, dreams become reality and even miracles can happen.

At MassMutual Greater Philadelphia, we are proud to serve you and are grateful for the trust that you place in us. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be a part of your life. We wish you and your family a safe, healthy & happy holiday & prosperous new year!
